| ESTIMATION OF THE POTENTIAL VULNERABILITY TO FLOODS BY “SUITABILITY MODELING” METHOD. CASE OF BATNA CITY, NORTHEAST OF ALGERIA | Author : Kenza SLIMANI, Mahdi KALLA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The city of Batna, one of the Algerian cities, is the most exposed to flood risks, which are highly active and constitute a threat to the residents and the infrastructure. To better understand the vulnerability of this phenomenon, an approach of cartography inspired by the method of “suitability modeling” is used. This method allows us to determine the potential vulnerability levels of the study zone; therefore, we need to consider several criteria: socioeconomic factors like density of population, land use, and also physical criteria such as permeability, flow direction, and the like. Each of these various criteria was built on a database, which constituting an important element for building a model that helps us determine the vulnerable zones by using various GIS applications. The applied approach that depends on how the criteria are suitable give us 4 different levels of vulnerability in Batna, which are as follows: high vulnerability, 13% of the city’s total surface, average vulnerability 5%, low vulnerability 0.7%, and null vulnerability 82%. |
| INTERDEPENDENCE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE CURRENT ACTIVITY OF THE FEMININE POPULATION WITH THE AGE OF 15 AND OVER AND THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN BORN ALIVE BY THEM IN DEPRESSION OF BEIU? | Author : Madalina ROPA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The present study wants to underline the particularities established between the present activity of the women with the age of 15 and over and their quality to have born children alive or not, the number of born children attribute to them, respectively, having as reference area the Depression of Beiu?. It were used data offered by the Census of the population and houses, accomplished in 2011. From the analysis of the results obtained, it can be observed that the percentage of women that have born alive children is higher in the rural feminine population (79,2%), and in the active population (80,3%), compared to the urban feminine population (73,5%), respectively the inactive one (74,9%), where their percentage is more reduced. Regarding the quantitative distribution of the women depending on the number of alive newborns predominates those with two children on the level of the entire socio economic categories registered, the exceptions being given by the feminine population of pupils and students, of persons supported and those with other economic situations, among which the highest percentage falls to the women with a child born alive. |
| SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF THE CHOSEN SOCIO-ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF CRIME IN POMERANIAN VOIVODESHIP IN 2015 | Author : Bartosz KORINTH, Oskar SKOMSKI, Tamara RUTKOWSKA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The main assumption of the study conducted by the authors was to analyse the chosen determinants of crime in pomeranian voivodeship in 2015 with particular focus on their spatial variability. The collected data was intercorrelated using the method of signboard. One can notice a particular division of this administrative unit of Poland, where the dominant role in the crime phenomenon is played by social (e.g. in slupski district) or economic (e.g. in chojnicki district) factors. The results of the study provide a new outlook on the geography of crime, particularly the one covering the regions of Poland. |
| HOUSING CONDITIONS IN KANO, NIGERIA: A QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF ADEQUACY | Author : Abdulqadir BELLO, István EGRESI | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Many studies have attempted to assess the qualitative adequacy of housing in Nigeria. However, most of these studies focus either on slums or on public housing projects. There are very few empirical studies that examine and compare the qualitative adequacy of housing belonging to different population groups and from different neighborhoods in a city. The purpose of this study is to assess the housing quality in the (entire) city of Kano, Nigeria and to examine the disparities in housing adequacy across the city based on four factors: neighborhood density level, location of the neighborhood relative to the old city wall, monthly household income and ownership type and status. We found that, although bad by western standards, the condition of dwellings in Kano is better than in other Nigerian cities (based on information from previous studies), even when we consider only the high-density neighborhoods. Another major conclusion of this paper is that the four indicators mentioned earlier can be used as predictors for the quality of housing in a particular neighborhood. |

| MOTIVATIONS FOR INVOLVEMENT IN URBAN CATFISH FARMING AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA | Author : Afolabi Monisola TUNDE | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :Fish farming is known as one of the ways of ensuring food security and alleviating poverty through income generation. It is very common in the urban areas of Nigeria because of great demand for fish. This study determines motivations for involvement in urban catfish farming and sustainable food security in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study identifies fish farmers and their socio-demographic characteristics in the study area; it examines motives of fish farming; examines the contributions of fish farming to household food security; and assesses the challenges faced by fish farmers for increased production. Both primary and secondary sources of information were employed and a total of 120 fish farmers were sampled randomly with copies of structured questionnaire. Frequency counts, percentages, tabulations and matrix ranking were employed to analyze the gathered data. The findings revealed that catfish production has actually contributed immensely to sustainable food security by making fish available, accessible and stable within the study area. The main motive for involvement in fish farming by the farmers includes food security (with a mean value of 3.80). This was followed by income supplement (x = 3.50), source of employment (x = 3.42) and increase in price of meat (x = 3.37). It can therefore be concluded that catfish farming in the study area has not only improve practitioners’ food security but has also contributed immensely to their income. The paper recommends the need to include fish farming in urban planning and that it should be encouraged in both rural and urban areas so as to have sustainable food security in the country as a whole. |
| CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN URBAN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE. FOCUS ON KICKSTARTER INITIATIVES | Author : Bogdan Nicolae PACURAR, Sabin Alexandru NICULA, Marcel POPA, George RUS | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :The concepts of innovation and creativity, as well as the territorial construct of city, have been, especially in the last few decades, the focus of an unprecendented and concerted scientific effort from all over the world. Many geographers, economists and urban planners studied how such a notions shape the fabric of urban areas and how they help them grow and develop. Kickstarter is an element of this triad, an innovative online platform which enables people to express their creativity and help gain funding for their ideas. This paper examines the Kickstarter projects launched in the 7 largest cities of three Central and Eastern European countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary), plot their distribution and attempt to see territorial patterns in their distribution across the urban areas of this part of the European Union and Europe itself. |

After collecting the statistical data, we processed and interpreted the data by creating tables, graphics, and maps, which improved our scientific endeavour. The aim of this paper was primarily to offer a general view of the existing accommodation capacity, from hotels to agrotouristic lodgings, classified by size and comfort level. According to the ministry, the accommodation infrastructure of Mures County comprised of 373 units with 11,466 beds in 2016 (17.8% of the total accommodation units and 26% of the existing beds in the Central Region). Most units were hotels with 4,832 beds, more than half being medium sized units (50-200 beds), rated with 3 stars, followed by touristic pensions with 3,206 beds, mostly located in Sovata, Sighisoara, and Târgu-Mures, motels with 805 beds, touristic villas with 581 beds, campings with 549 beds, rooms for rent with 531 beds, hostels with 329 beds, tourist stops with 222 beds, touristic and hunting lodges, 208 beds, agrotouristic pensions, 169 beds, rented apartments, 66 beds and vacation villages, 22 beds. Mures County, according to the Ministry of Tourism, has only one national designated touristic resort, Sovata, being the most complex and intricate touristic development (117 units with 4,179 beds), and one local resort, Sângeorgiu de Mures (7 units with 202 beds). In 2016, there were 1,035 705 overnight stays made by 517,111 tourists, with an average of 2 overnight stays/tourist. |
| SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF SOME BUSINESS ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA OF SMALL AND MID-SIZE CITIES (PERI-URBAN AREA) IN THE COUNTY OF ZAGREB | Author : Jellena LONCAR | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract :In this paper the purpose of the research was to register, map and analyse business entities in the small and mid-size cities in the County of Zagreb, and on this basis get conclusions of the economic and spatial structure in the area. The analysed area includes the central parts of eight cities, i.e. the areas with the highest number of business activities. Since the most of the activities are concentrated in the cities, municipalities in the County are not included into this research. Census of business activities shows certain patterns i.e. that most of the cities in analysed area are still getting behind in number and quality of business entities according to those in the City of Zagreb and that polarization of business structure is obvious between those two areas. |
